The University of Southampton, in partnership with the Aspire consortium, has received planning approval and listed building consent to proceed with the redevelopment of its Wessex Lane halls of residence complex. Willmore Iles Architects are delighted to be involved in this project and to support its progress through to the next stages.

The development will increase student accommodation capacity by up to 1,108 beds through the redevelopment of the old and new Connaught quads, alongside the refurbishment of the Grade II* listed South Stoneham House. The building dates from 1708 and is attributed to Nicholas Hawksmoor, with grounds attributed to Capability Brown.

This scheme will provide much-needed, high-quality student accommodation in the city by making effective use of existing university-owned land, while ensuring the careful conservation of a significant heritage asset.

Construction is scheduled to commence in late 2026, creating opportunities for local employment and business involvement throughout the build programme. Upon completion, facilities management will be undertaken by Aspire Students Limited.

This planning consent marks the beginning of a 50-year programme between the University of Southampton and the Aspire consortium, focused on enhancing the student living experience. The Aspire consortium partners bring a strong track record in the delivery of accommodation and infrastructure projects, having collaborated on approximately 30,000 student beds across the UK to date.
